Sustainable Materials Management: U.S. State Data Measurement Sharing Program
We are grateful for the dedication of our State Measurement Program partners and their efforts to reduce and divert waste. EPA is planning to evolve our Sustainable Materials Management partnership programs to align with our new priorities. At this time, we are no longer accepting new State Measurement Program partners.
The State Data Measurement Sharing Program (SMP) is an online reporting, information sharing, and measurement tool that allows U.S. states to share a wide range of information including annual tonnage data (waste, recycling and composting, etc.), descriptions of the types of waste and recycling programs in the state, and financial summaries of how the programs are staffed and funded. The SMP includes several resources, including a template consisting of 15 questions, as well as the Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) Resource Module (a compendium of state programmatic data).
After the annual data sharing, a series of analytical reports are generated that summarize, aggregate and present the information on a state, regional and national level.
Goals of the State Data Measurement Sharing Program:
- Accelerates managing materials and products on a lifecycle basis
- Drives market signals and economic interventions to improve materials management
- Improves data, tools, research and internal/external processes
- Expands the public dialogue on how materials management impacts the environment
- Engages the business community to think across the lifecycle and the value chain
- Promotes the replication of successful recycling, reuse and source reduction ideas and programs
